Is it tacky to plan your own birthday party?

I recently read a post where the subject matter was whether or not it was tacky to give yourself a birthday party.  And I was surprised that some of the comments were rather harsh.  I don't see what the issue is, but let me explain why.

For many years in my family, I was the family planner.  If a birthday, anniversary, graduation, or whatever was coming around, I made sure there was a party and took care of the arrangements.  And I mean I went all out, no skimping for this bitch.  If there's a reason to celebrate, my thought is Go Big or Don't Bother!

That being said, you would think that when it came around to my birthday, that all of these people I have planned and sacrificed blood, sweat, and even a few tears for would step up and reciprocate right?  RIGHT???  I mean that would only be fair.  Well, apparently fucking not.  On more than one birthday as an adult, I have been let down by the fact that those I hold near and dear had an EPIC FAIL and did NOTHING for my birthday.  Oh I got a late card and a few phone calls, but come on!  Seriously, this is the best you can do??

I haven't really stressed the importance of my birthday to me.  It's the one day a year that I consider MY DAY, and yes I know I share the same birthday with lots of other people.  But still.  It's the day I set foot on this screwed up planet, so it's a big day to me.  And I don't think that I should have to go without some kind of celebratory action simply because others are not with the program.

So I have to wonder, why is it tacky to plan your own blowout?  I look at it as taking charge so your birthday is as awesome as you want it to be.

  1. I say do it! The best birthday parties I've ever had were planned by me and the reason they were the best is two reasons... 1. I actually set up a time/place and invited people and 2. it was what I wanted to do, not what someone thought I might like to do.

I'd rather be tacky than have a sucky birthday. Plus, tacky is way more fun!

    1. You are EXACTLY right!! Oh you're a woman after my own heart! I was sure I wasn't the only one who could see the sense in taking things into your own hands sometimes - birthdays being one of them!
